£1.1m recovered as a result of negligent bowel surgery

Medical negligence partner recovered £1.1m for a client from the South Wales valleys as a result of negligently performed bowel surgery. As a result of the surgery the client suffered from severe peritonitis. She had to remain in hospital for over two years. Her mobility was severely affected as a result of her long-term illness and she was left with a permanent stoma, which leaked repeatedly.

Colorectal surgery process

Colorectal Surgery repairs damage to the colon, rectum and anus through a variety of procedures that may have little or great long term consequence to the patient.

Colorectal Surgery is a necessary treatment option for many illnesses including:

  • Colorectal (bowel) cancer
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Crohn’s disease

Surgical removal of the damaged area or areas can return bowel function to normal.

In other cases a colostomy bag may be required.

In some circumstances, the surgery can go wrong and this may be down to medical negligence, also known as clinical negligence. Injury, in the form of unintentional damage to the bowel, can be caused to the patient. This may result in a multitude of long term complications.
