Causes of bile duct injury
Bile duct injuries are usually caused during gall bladder surgery, such as removal of gallstones, or during abdominal surgery, particularly of the liver. During surgery there are numerous causes that could contribute to a bile duct injury, these include:
- Haemorrhage
- Infection
- Bile leakage – which should be prevented by placing clips onto the tube connecting the gallbladder to bile duct
- Injury to the bile duct
- Injury to intestine, bowel and blood vessels
