Action Mesothelioma Day | Our work with Asbestos Awareness and Support Cymru (AASC)

Written by Maddie Allen, Solicitor in our Asbestos Ligation team.

We are proud to work closely with Asbestos Awareness and Support Cymru (AASC), a registered charity providing support and guidance to victims of asbestos related illness and their families in Wales. AASC have established a wide network of support throughout Wales and its mission is to improve quality of life for those living with an asbestos related illness, as well as their families and carers.

AASC offers specific Mesothelioma and Asbestosis Support Groups and it hosts support groups for bereaved carers, providing an important opportunity for individuals affected by asbestos related illness to meet with and speak to those who have shared experiences. Importantly, AASC raises awareness of asbestos related illness, the difficulties that are faced by those affected and the support that is available to them. Its relationships with GPs, Consultants, Nurse Specialists, Benefit Advisors and Solicitors ensure there is a wide range of support.

Jo Barnes-Mannings, Support Officer and Founder of AASC (Asbestos Awareness & Support Cymru) said:

“It has been a privilege to be able to provide support to victims of asbestos related illnesses in Wales over the last twelve years. As an independent charity, AASC has done this through the provision of a telephone helpline, signposting service and facilitation of regular online and in person events. Each year, Action Mesothelioma Day has provided a wonderful opportunity to bring families with a shared understanding together in mutual support in the hope of raising awareness and calling for improved treatments, care and further investment into Mesothelioma research. We are extremely grateful for the kind support which has made this possible.”

Hugh James’ specialist asbestos solicitors represent victims and their families throughout Wales. Whilst exposure to asbestos can occur in various settings, Wales has a long industrial heritage and historically, asbestos was used in industrial workplaces in Wales, including steelworks, factories, power stations, docks/shipyards and in construction. There are sadly numerous industrial workers in Wales who have gone onto develop an asbestos related condition as a result of historic exposure to asbestos. The specialist team at Hugh James continues to support those who have been diagnosed with an asbestos related illness by securing compensation to allow access to vital care and treatment.
