Charities, communities & CSR

Our work with charities on a local and national level plays a huge part in our day-to-day lives at Hugh James.

We work with a large range of charities, some of which we support through fundraising and donations, and others we partner with where our areas of work cross paths.

Each year we raise money for our national charities in a variety of ways. Our headline events involve our staff and our clients as we know many of them share our passion and values when it comes to supporting and fundraising.

We’re committed to supporting the communities in which we live and work.

Our national charity partners

Our national partnership approach delivers a sustained support for our three nominated charities over a minimum two-year period. The current charities are Ty Hafan, Velindre Cancer Care,  Theodora Children’s Charity and PAPYRUS. The national charities are chosen by our employees based at the Cardiff Headquarters and offices in England.

These charities will receive a donation from the firm and the proceeds from fundraising activities throughout the year. Read more about our charity partners.

Rugby lunch

A highlight in our events calendar, the Hugh James Rugby Lunch brings together businesses from the local community to raise money for our national charities based in Wales.

Through our events like this, to date we’ve raised more than £300,000 for our national charities which is something we’re incredibly proud of.

Here’s a snapshot of our 2023 event hosted by Ryan Jones, former Wales rugby captain, who has long supported our charity fundraising events.

HJ community impact

We know our people are passionate about making an impact in the community. We give each of our employees two paid days per year to do something important to get involved in projects that make a positive difference in their communities with bona fide charitable organisations. We also seek out partnership opportunities to support our employee’s wellbeing, taking care of their physical and mental health.

Additionally, we collaborate with charity foundations to support social issues and community development. The Hugh James Emergency Fund provides support for those facing the unexpected costs associated catastrophic injury. Our annual pro bono scheme with Cardiff University gives future generation lawyers access to the legal profession.

Sponsorships

Cardiff Rugby Foundation

As official legal partner of Cardiff Rugby since 2019, our partnership symbolises our commitment to the sports sector and Welsh rugby communities. Supporting the games at Cardiff Arms Park also means that our colleagues and clients are given the opportunity to follow the team and experience live sporting action.

Our partnership extends to providing support for the Cardiff Rugby Foundation which uses rugby and the Cardiff Rugby brand to harness social good and make an impact in communities both socially and economically. We are currently working with their Players Association to establish a mentoring programme to enhance the development of players thinking about their careers post-rugby.

Long Course Weekend Wales

As title sponsors of Long Course Weekend Wales Powered by Hugh James our partnership provides vital support to local sporting and educational groups in the Pembrokeshire.

The biggest multisport festival in Europe, The Long Course Weekend  event attracts more than 11,000 athletes, 35,000 supporters from 56 nations to compete over three incredible days.

Our partnership provides exciting participation opportunities for our colleagues to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of sport, be that volunteering, supporting or the epic run, swim and cycle. It also supports the LCW community Legacy Programme, a project which has helped hundreds of children in the Pembrokeshire area with extra swimming coaches in lessons, sports days and provided bikes in local primary schools.

South Wales Football Association

We have joined forces with South Wales Football Association to sponsor the South Wales FA Senior Cup, one of the longest running Cup competitions in South Wales, and all South Wales FA Cups for the 2023/2024 season, including the Women’s Senior Cup, Sunday Intermediate Cup (Danny Gomes Memorial Cup), the Girls’ U14’s & 15’s Cup, the Boys’ Cup U14’s, 15’s & 16’s.

Supporting the full spectrum of men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ football competitions in the region, the partnership reflects a shared commitment to diversity and inclusion and promoting sport for all.
