I’ve always had the greatest respect and admiration for carers. My work brings me into contact with many who are devoting their lives to supporting loved ones.
I see first-hand the love, care and devotion they invest – and the toll it inevitably places on them.
For over 20 years, my colleagues and I in the Court of Protection team at Hugh James have been supporting clients and their families following traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, providing help – with a heavy emphasis on rehabilitation.
We are a contact point for the many families and carers that we work with and liaise closely with case managers, support teams as well as charities that provide support to carers.
It has been heart-breaking to see the impact of COVID-19 on these families. Access to services and resources have been reduced and restricted. Lockdown and shielding have made life even more lonely and isolating.
There are 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers – people looking after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness or who needs extra help as they grow older.
It makes this year’s Carers Week even more important. These are difficult times for so many of the UK’s unsung heroes. Now, more than ever, they need our support and thanks. The nation’s carers deserve to be visible, to be recognised and appreciated for the marvellous work they’re doing.
At Hugh James, we see that, we know that and we’re eternally grateful to them all.
