Alan Collins speaks at the Third Regional Workshop on Justice for Children in East Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok

The Third Regional Workshop on Justice for Children in East Asia and the Pacific is being hosted by Unicef and HCCH (Hague Conference on Private International Law) in partnership with Child Redress from 4-7 September 2018.

Child sexual exploitation and abuse is a massive issue that needs considerable focus. In recognition of the importance of this subject, the entire final day of the conference focuses on Civil Justice for Child Victims of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. The day will see Justin Levinson of 1COR and I speak on the UK context of foreign child victims (details below).

The purpose of the conference is outlined below:

  • Examine the role and value of the Hague Children’s Conventions in addressing cross-border child protection cases in East Asia and the Pacific, and to discuss some of the practicalities surrounding the implementation of those Conventions and the need to ratify them if not yet done.
  • Understand how the best interests of the child are ensured in custody and care arrangement and other family and child protection matters as well as in new issues like surrogacy and migration.
  • Strengthen the coordination between justice professionals and social workers on issues that affect the international protection of children, including their role in implementing multilateral treaties and conventions as well as domestic family law.
  • Be familiar with good practices in civil justice for child victims of sexual exploitation and abuse.
  • Be updated on the latest developments, trends, and good practices in the development and enforcement of environmental law and its impact on child rights.
