Remembrance Week

Written by Matthew Hale, Associate in our Military department.

Our Military department has a long-established tradition of supporting military and veterans’ charities.

November is a poignant month for our Armed Forces and the veteran community and provides an important opportunity for reflection. In the week leading up to 11 November, our Military department were busy organising events in support of Military causes.

Woody’s wine tasting

Our Military team invited representatives from Woody’s Lodge to Two Central Square on Wednesday 6 November 2024 for an evening of wine tasting and fundraising.

Woody’s Lodge is a social hub, which guides veterans to the help and support they need to re-engage with their families and communities. Their vision is to create an inviting meeting space for those who have served within the armed forces and emergency services, where they can receive expert support & advice as well as the chance to connect with new and old friends and family.

There was a competitive element to the evening as participants had to correctly guess where in the world the wines had originated from, with some far more successful at this challenge than others!

The event, organised by Catrin Spees and Francesca Bamsey, was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen the ties between our Military Department and Woody’s Lodge and, most importantly, £640.00 was raised for a fantastic cause.

Remembrance Day walk

On Friday 8 November, our Military team, along with Kevin McCarthy from Medical Legal Appointments, completed an 11-mile walk, in support of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

The walk took the team around historical locations in the Merthyr area, along the Taff Fechan trail to the countryside villages of Pontsarn and Pontsticill in the Brecon Beacons National Park before looping back around to Merthyr. Fortunately, the weather was kind and whilst there was some spitting rain, we weren’t treated to the worst of Welsh autumnal weather!

With Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday taking place in the days following the walk, this was an apt time to support the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. The Poppy Appeal was founded to help service personnel and veterans, should the need arise. Right now, they are helping those who are isolated from family, facing homelessness, struggling to feed their children and are in financial crisis. They work tirelessly to ensure that those who have served are being supported despite the challenges they may face.

The charity walk raised £295.00 for the Royal British Legion and the team would like to extend a big thank you to all those who donated.

Should you wish to, you can still donate to the Royal British Legion via our fundraising page. Any further donations would be greatly appreciated.

Our Military team continue to provide legal services to veterans and service personnel who require advice on a range of military service legal issues. In our day-to-day work, we hear personal stories of the difficulties and challenges service personnel and veterans encounter, whether it be through an injury sustained or their experience of the transition from military to civilian life.
