Settlement secured for former Coventry Homefire Plant employee

The Hugh James Asbestos team is running a virtual relay in support of several great charities and support groups which help people diagnosed with the asbestos related disease, mesothelioma. For the next leg of their virtual journey, they are making their way from Oxford to Kettering, via Coventry. We take a virtual stop along the way to look back at the successful settlement that was secured for client, Mr L.

From the late 1960’s until the early 1990’s Mr L worked at the Homefire Plant in Coventry as a welder/fabricator where he was exposed to asbestos dust and fibres.

Mr L worked next to laggers applying both powdered asbestos lagging and pre-moulded sections of asbestos lagging to components that Mr L had fabricated.

Mr L was also present when members of the lagging team removed sections of asbestos lagging on pipework to allow him access for repairs.

Pipework was often located in confined areas with no ventilation. Mr L would then work amongst the asbestos lagging debris on hands and knees for low level repairs. He would end up covered in asbestos dust.

Many years later this exposure led to Mr L being diagnosed with asbestos related pleural thickening. Following this diagnosis Mr L instructed Hugh James Solicitors.

Following the issue of court proceedings, Hugh James swiftly secured a settlement for Mr L in the sum of £35,000.00. Importantly the settlement also allowed Mr L to return for further compensation should he develop another asbestos related condition in the future.
