For two well-known Cardiff businesswomen, the Chinese New Year has marked the beginning of an uphill climb as they get into training for an 11 day trek along the Great Wall of China to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Lawyer Alison Love, who heads the Employment Department at Hugh James and Human Resources Advisor, Dorothy Johnson, are off to tackle the 300 steps of ‘Heaven’s Ladder’ in April and have already raised around £4,000 towards their figure of £10,000.

Both women are hoping that the South Wales business community will respond generously to their fundraising events over the coming months. These range from  a Chinese New Year Party which raised over £2,000, a fun Music Night with Big Mac’s Wholly Soul Band in Penarth’s Paget Rooms on 6 March and a prestigious business lunch in Cardiff’s Holland House Hotel on 25 March where BBC Wales’ own Weatherman Walking, Derek Brockway will be the guest speaker.

Neither Alison or Dorothy have done anything like this before but feel very strongly that they want to raise as much money as possible for Macmillan. Alison says that she has been thrilled so far with the support she has had from Hugh James and her clients and contacts. She said  “I have lost a number of friends and colleagues to cancer in the past year and this challenge allows me to support a charity that does so much for cancer patients and their families”.

Meanwhile Dorothy has had direct experience of Macmillan’s support during her mother’s battle with the disease. She said “Macmillan helped my family to ensure that my mother’s final weeks were made as comfortable as possible, supporting us at home during a very difficult time so I am keen to raise as much money as possible by taking part in this challenge and I do hope the business community will come up trumps by buying tickets for our fund-raising events”.

Tickets and sponsorship packages are now available for the Business Lunch on Thursday 25 March at the Mercure Holland House Hotel. Tickets are £45.
